Some people were doing it because they knew someone with cancer or had the disease themselves and others were doing it just for the thrill of taking on the jaw-dropping feat.

There was a tense atmosphere on Observatory Hill in Clifton where those about to go on the zip wire were, not surprisingly, steeling their nerves.

For a few, like 71-year-old Ian Kerr, who wore his Bristol Morris Men outfit for the event, being so high held no fears.

Mr Kerr, a retired aeronautical engineer from Stoke Bishop, is a balloonist as well as a Morris dancer.

He said: “I’ve always fancied doing a zip wire across the Avon Gorge. I was surprised and delighted when I heard that this event had been organised.

“Since I entered for it one of my friends has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.”

Alex Penberthy, 33, of Beachcroft Solicitors and his colleague Ollie Williamson, raised about Pounds 700 in sponsorship for Cancer Research UK between them.

Before crossing the gorge Mr Penberthy, of Horfield, said: “I really enjoy doing high octane activities – I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

“The whole idea of going across the Avon Gorge on a zip wire sounded brilliant – handbags w I can’t wait.

“My grandfather died from cancer so Cancer Research UI has always been my number one charity to give to.”

For student William Laws, from Westbury-sub-Mendip, near Wells, the zip wire crossing was a very memorable 21st birthday present from his mum Jackie, 55, who did it too. They were among the first people to cross.

“I wouldn’t ask anyone for funds unless I was prepared to do it myself. People have been really incredible in their generosity. William and I have raised Pounds 2,000.” William said his mum was “very brave” but as a downhill mountain bike racer he was looking forward to a new challenge.

Tom Ash, 37, of Long Ashton, who is in the Army, dressed as daredevil spy James Bond for the event.

Wearing a smart suit and bow tie Mr Ash said: “A friend was doing it and I thought this was an opportunity not to be missed.

“I have done smaller zip wires before and a bit of abseiling. I’m not scared, just cautious.”

He said he decided to dress up for the event to mark the occasion.

Those who took part raised thousands of pounds for the charity’s groundbreaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
